As you read the passage below, consider how the author uses:
• evidence, such as facts or examples, to support claims
• reasoning to develop ideas and to connect claims and evidence
• stylistic or persuasive elements, such as word choice or appeals to emotion, to add power to the ideas expressed
Passage:
"In recent decades, our cities have been redesigned around the needs of the automobile. Wide roads, sprawling parking lots, and highway overpasses have consumed vast swaths of urban land. This approach has come at enormous cost: communities severed, air quality degraded, and pedestrian spaces eliminated. The rise of traffic-induced fatalities has turned our streets into corridors of danger rather than vibrant public spaces. It is time to fundamentally reimagine the urban environment by prioritizing people over vehicles. Cities that have adopted pedestrianization and expanded public transit have seen economic revitalization, reduced emissions, and improved public health outcomes. The evidence is clear: a city built for humans, not cars, is a city built for the future."
Write an essay in which you explain how the author builds an argument to persuade readers that cities should be redesigned to prioritize people over vehicles. In your essay, analyze how the author uses one or more of the features listed above (or features of your own choice) to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of the argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage.
Your essay should not explain whether you agree with the author's claims, but rather explain how the author builds an argument to persuade the audience.
